Welcome to all things Ernest Hemingway on behalf of the family!
If you are over 65 years old, brace yourself: you are about to encounter us outside of your local library.
If you are under 65 years old, you may not know much about Ernest, because we did not meet you where you are; that has changed. You will now find us on the Web and on social media. Soon you will find us on other platforms as well. This isn't a launch-and-done effort, this is a commitment to bring Ernest Hemingway to this generation and future generations.
In this effort, our mantra is Literature, Life, and Legacy: the works, the man and the pursuit of The Life Well Lived.
We start with the writing: for too long, we ignored the cultural shift from Novel to Content, which meant that we were not on the platforms we should have been. We are actively changing that: whether you prefer to read, listen, watch, stream or download, we will be there, if not now then in the next few months. And watch this space for announcements as we migrate onto the other platforms and formats.
Context is important, so we add the life: Ernest was passionate about nature, about truth, about good conversation and good company. He was also deeply invested in the cultural currents that shaped his era and he put his money where his mouth was. Youthful idealism led him to volunteer for service in World War I. A prescient concern about the rise of Fascism led him to cover the Spanish Civil War. A willingness to step in led him to hunt submarines which menaced the eastern US Coast--not a hobby but an officially sanctioned operation which is part of why we have a US Coast Guard. He reluctantly went to Europe to chronicle the effort to free Europe from Nazi Germany's rule. Then there was the wry, introverted, hardworking writer that few people met.
This life was marked with a zest for living, an interest in what was good and fine. He was equally at home with the nobility and peasantry. He enjoyed good food and good wine and beautiful country and stimulating company. His legacy lives on in a combination of a taste for adventure and an appreciation of the memorable moment.
Weaving these threads together into a single braid has not been easy and it is on-going. This website is that braid: your starting point for all things Hemingway. From here you will be able to find everything we have from the Literature, the Life and Legacy. We look forward to sharing all of this with all of you in whatever ways the 21st century offers.
